Fashola counsels children on security

LAGOS—GOVERNOR Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Monday, urged children in the state to be vigilant and security-conscious as the state joined the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s Children’s Day.
Speaking at the celebration held at the Police College Ground, Ikeja, Fashola said: “There have been some unpleasant reports of some bad people who now live among us.
“In order to avoid these people and to remain safe, you must desist from boarding any unregistered vehicle or vehicles not painted in the state yellow and black colour.”
He added that the children “should also be wary of the type of company you keep. And be careful with how you associate with strangers by refusing to be tempted with gift and money.
“When you are confronted with any issue, seek your parents’, guidance and teacher’s advice and never shun their warning.
“While we relied on the government to provide the suitable atmosphere, we listened to our parents and we joined clubs that would impact on our academics and these kept us away from these kidnappers.
“If you also do so by joining good clubs like the traffic club, energy club and others, the sky is your limit.”
Fashola assured the children that the state government would continue to work hard with security officials to ensure they were kept safe from the menace of kidnappers.

Kwara poly students protest shooting of colleague

Ilorin – Commercial  activities were on Monday paralysed in Ilorin, the Kwara capital,  as students of  the state-owned  polytechnic  took to the streets in  protest at the shooting of their colleague.
Eye witnesses said the incident happened around 2 p.m. when a policeman attached to a bullion van shot at the student who was in a cab heading  to the main campus of the institution.
The student, Ahmed Dayo, was said to have sustained serious injuries as a result of the gun shot.
The eye-witness said that the wounded student, an ND 1 Accounting student,  was going to the campus to collect his  identity card.
NAN gathered that the taxi driver had stopped to pick  another passenger when the policeman in the bullion van  ordered him to move off the road.
The eyewitness  said  the policeman attempted to shoot the tyre of the taxi, but instead shot the student inside the taxi cab.
The policemen and the driver of the bullion van were  said to  have  fled   to a nearby bank to seek refuge, further infuriating the students around the scene of the incident.
NAN also gathered that the students set up a bonfire on the busy road disrupting human and vehicular movement.
All shops, offices and banks on the long stretch of Murtala Mohammed road were hurriedly shut  while traders in the area fled.
The student was rushed to  the nearby Ayodele Medical Centre where he  was attended to.

He was referred to the University of  Ilorin Teaching Hospital for full medical attention after being given first aid treatment.

Nigerian Female Rapper Muna in love with 18-yr-old rapper

Briss-and-Muna-copy-600x600
Don’t we just love when our celebrities set it off and fall in love (or lust) with each other? It has come to our attention that beauty queen turned   is romantically involved with Pop group, L.O.S band member Olade Brisbe better known as Briss.
The couple, we are told, have been in a hot romance for the past few months and they’ve managed to keep it under the wraps with only very close friends in the know.
We are also told Muna has confided in her close friends, telling them she’s in love with the 18-year-old rapper. Briss, an upcoming rapper started gaining buzz when the Urban-Pop music group L.O.S (the group consists of three other members – Yung, Tomi and Bridge) signed with Storm Records and released their popular single ‘Bad guy P’.
Briss who is currently an undergraduate in a Dubai university spends time shuttling Lagos and the U.A.E but his schooling hasn’t stopped the ‘lovers’ from hooking up – sources tell us Briss, (who is from quite a wealthy family) has on several occasions flown Muna over just to be with her.
Briss last April posted a photo of himself and Muna cooling off in a Dubai beach. ‘At the beach.. Ofcourse Muna being a mess lol #dubai’, Briss wrote as he posted the photo on his Instagram. Muna in turn has been quite supportive of Briss and his group’s music. If she’s not tweeting about their new songs, she’s chatting up with the other band members.
Some dated tweets between Muna and Briss also suggest there’s something holding on between them:
@muna01: ‘@BrisB_LOS duuuude wen r u back?
@BrisB_LOS: very very soon muna! booked a flight already tho. How you now?
@muna01: @BrisB_LOS: chillin boo.
@BrisB_LOShope your good sha.
But speaking with NET over the telephone Muna denies being romantically involved with Briss. ‘That sounds ridiculous, I’m in a relationship with someone else’, Muna told NET.
Muna turns 26 this November. In 2007, she won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria beauty pageant.
Before the MBGN crown, she had however shown interest in music, rapping under the name Babyrella. She recorded a rap duet with Terry tha Rapman whom it is rumoured she dated at that time.
In 2010, she changed her name to Muna and signed a management deal with Ayo Shonaiya’s RMG Company, launching her music career.
She has gone on to feature with the likes of Waje, Kel, Michael Word, Banky W, DJ Jimmy JATT andPsquare.
And Briss is not the first Nigerian artiste Muna has been rumoured to be involved with. We are told she has also allegedly been involved with several other acts including D’banj, , Wizkid and Peter Okoye. Of course the sister continues to – vehemently – deny these unconfirmed reports.Screenshot at May 27 21-39-31

Airtel takes 3.75 G service to Burkina Faso

New Delhi / Nairobi –Bharti Airtel (“Airtel”), a leading telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, took a significant step towards building the largest 3G network across Africa by announcing the launch of its 3G mobile platform in Burkina Faso.
The launch of the 3.75G follows the award of a 3G license to Airtel by the Burkina Faso Government. The granting of the license is an important milestone since it will contribute to the development of the country and it will facilitate Internet access for all Burkinabé.
The launch of the 3G platform promises profound changes in the way Airtel subscribers experience the web on internet-enabled cell phones. The improved technology will enhance multimedia functionality, high speed mobile broadband and internet access; allowing  users to make video calls, watch live TV, send and receive emails, and download music from the handheld devices.
This is the latest technology HSPSA + being launched in several European and American countries. Reaching speeds of up to 21 mbps, Airtel’s 3.75G network is one of the fastest available globally and it will be immensely beneficial to multinationals, SMEs and the youth.
“3G technology will give our customers the opportunity to interact with cellular technology in a different way,” explains Tiemoko Coulibaly, CEO of Airtel Africa Francophone Region. “This is why Airtel doesn’t see 3G as a product, but rather as a platform that enables our subscribers to experience data better.”
According to Mr. Coulibaly, Airtel’s goal is to build the largest 3G network on the continent, while continuing to provide innovative and useful services which will enable customers to take full advantage of this new technology.
Hervé-Njapoum Olivier, the Managing Director of Airtel Burkina Faso, said: “We are grateful towards the political and administrative authorities of Burkina Faso for the granting of the license through the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Post. We share the same vision on strengthening the country’s telecommunications platform. Airtel’s 3.75G network will enhance the social, cultural and commercial participation of the people of Burkina Faso and it will connect them with the global community. ”
He added: “Our 3G platform will allow subscribers to combine the enormous potential of the Internet with the convenience of cellular phones and other mobile devices. It will unleash the potential of our youth by providing quick access to the Internet for learning, sharing, social networks, creation and access to educational and musical content. For Small and Medium Enterprises, it will allow the entrepreneur to adopt a highly mobile way of working with a very fast access to emails and the Internet. For the larger companies, they can increase their productivity with high-speed Internet.”
Airtel is committed to always expand its network coverage and bringing communication opportunities to the people. Thus, after Ouagadougou, the deployment of 3.75G network will continue in other cities such as Bobo-Dioulasso, Ouahigouya Koudougou, Banfora and Ziniaré.
Africa is an emerging market and subscribers across the continent are increasingly demanding a more reliable network and superior services. To provide infrastructure and high level solutions to meet these requirements, Airtel has chosen to trust Ericsson, as a supplier. Thanks to the Ericsson equipment, the latest version of the 3G technology will be deployed in Burkina Faso.
According to data from McKinsey & Co., there are currently about 400 million mobile subscribers in Africa. Telecommunications is one of the continent’s fastest growing industries with a rapidly expanding cellular phone market that now includes internet access, mobile banking and mobile commerce.

Parents call on FG to review policy of teaching morals in schools

Abuja – In commemoration of the 2013 Children’s Day celebration, parents have called on the Federal Government to review its policy to include the teaching of morals in schools.
Some of the parents and children spoke on Monday in Abuja.
Mrs Fransisca Oga, a producer with the Independent Television (ITV), said that most schools did not teach cultural norms and values because the children were taught in English.
“I will like to blame government’s policy because in schools, you need to teach other Nigerian languages right from nursery through primary school and then secondary.
“By so doing, morals and the way to relate with people will be very easy for the children.
“I believe children should be taught Nigerian languages and make English a second language,’’ Oga said.
She also stressed the need for parents to assist the society by instilling discipline in the children.
She said that most parents, who want their children to perform better in the society should endeavour to inculcate good morals in them.
“It starts from the parents; there are certain things that a child can learn by emulation. The parents must set a standard to live a life that is pleasing.
“Parents must be able to lay down rules and stick to them and every rule should have a reason and defaulters sanctioned.
“The bible says `train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it’, this should be the principle through which homes should be governed,” Oga said.
Mrs Mariam Ibrahim, a mother and housewife, stressed the need for the mother tongue to be taught at home.
Ibrahim, however, solicited support from the government to keep children off the streets and engage them positively by ensuring they were put in school.
“A wealthy man in Nigeria can spend N10,000 on pepper soup. But if that money is spent on the education of two children, it will go a long way in developing the nation.
“Government, therefore, has a lot to do in keeping children off the streets, so as to solve the problem of child labour.’’
Some children in the FCT also decried the spate of child labour in the country.
Miss Jessica Onyebuchi, a JSS 1 student of St. Augustine Secondary School, Maitama, said that education was important for a child to be relevant in the society.
She urged government to enact a law that would totally eradicate child labour.
Onyebuchi stressed the need for parents and guardians to provide quality education for their children and wards.
She said that most parents and guardians engaged the children in all kinds of child labour, ranging from hawking, trading to being house helps, which affected their studies.
“It is not good to see children after closing from school still hawking and selling for their parents.
“These children cannot concentrate in school and as a result their level of performance dropped in the school,’’ Onyebuchi said.
Another student, Miss Chiamaka Aniagu, urged other children to embrace the Nigerian culture, because it helped to instil morals.
Aniagu also urged government to protect children from the rising spate of child theft and child prostitution.
At some parks and orphanages in the FCTt there was a large turnout of children in these places.
Some of these places visited include, Mother Theresa Children’s Home, Monaliza Park and Heritage Home. (NAN)

Woman uses toy gun in alleged robbery

A 25-year-old woman, Esther Obianuju, who allegedly attempted to rob a woman of her valuables with a toy gun, was on Monday arraigned in Lagos.
Obianuju is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted robbery at a Lagos High Court, Igbosere.
The accused, whose address is unknown, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Mr W.A. Quadri, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 2, 2012, at No. 159A, Akerele Extension, Surulere, Lagos, at 2.45 p.m.
He said that Obianuju, who was armed with a toy gun, conspired with others and attempted to rob the complainant, one Miss Rukayat Abdulsalat, of her valuables.
Quadri, a state counsel, sought an adjournment to enable the prosecution to gather witnesses and evidence.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 296 and 298 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Mr Sporgeon Ataene, counsel to the accused, informed the court that a bail application had been filed and urged the court to consider it.
Justice Christopher Balogun, after listening to both parties, adjourned the case to June 11 for the hearing of the bail application.
He fixed July 9 for the substantive criminal trial. (NAN)
