Rooney slams 'rubbish' reports he intentionally removed Manchester United from Twitter bio

Rooney slams 'rubbish' reports he intentionally removed Manchester United from Twitter bioWayne Rooney has hit out at newspaper reports suggesting that he intentionally removed 'Manchester United' from his Twitter biography as speculation over his future continues to mount.

Goal exclusively revealed on Thursday that Arsenal and Chelsea have joined the race to sign the 27-year-old, who has already told Sir Alex Ferguson he wants to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Rooney insists the change to his social media bio was made three weeks ago but claims the alteration was made at the request of his sponsors Nike.

“There’s a load of rubbish being written about me changing twitter bio saying I have deleted Manchester United from it," read a statement from Rooney.

"I have never deleted Manchester United from the bio whatever the papers are saying because it was never on there.

"All that happened was that I was asked by Nike to add @nikeuk to it – the same as many other sportspeople they sponsor. Funny, no-one’s written about that though!

"That change was made three weeks ago and yet people are talking about it as if its something that was put up yesterday."

A spokesman for Nike said: "In April we asked Wayne Rooney and other Nike-sponsored athletes to add nikeuk on to their profiles due to changes in ASA guidelines relating to athletes and social media."

Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed he will take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United at the end of the season.

Following the announcement of the 71-year-old's retirement, United players had been told at the club's Carrington training ground in the wake of the Scot's decision that the Toffees boss had been identified as his successor.

"Everton can confirm that David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season," a statement on the club's official website read. "The manager met chairman Bill Kenwright early yesterday evening [May 8] and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United."

Moyes will coach Everton's final two games - against West Ham and Chelsea - before moving to Manchester Untied at the end of the season. Everton officials will start the search for his replacement immediately.

Moyes has coached over 500 games for Everton and led the club in four European campaigns in 12 seasons.

"The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002," the club said. "He has been an outstanding manager."

Moyes replaces Ferguson, who will leave Manchester United after guiding the club to its 20th league title this season and move upstairs to become a director and ambassador.

Ferguson took charge of United in 1986 and enjoyed a trophy-filled 27 years at the club. United has won the Premier League title 13 times and topped the Champions League in 1999 and 2008.

Ferguson's final match will be against West Brom on May 19, which will mark his 1500th game in charge of United.

"The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly," he said. "It is the right time. It was important to me to leave an organization in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so."

ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK, MAY 10 2013—Teams from the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), together with Ministry of Health staff, have treated more than 110 people for blast injuries from election-related violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas over the past four days, MSF said today.
Pakistan is experiencing an increase in violence related to the general and provincial elections taking place on May 11, in the country's first democratic transition of power. MSF staff treated patients for blast injuries at facilities in Hangu and Lower Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kurram Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

"This is exacerbating an already very difficult situation for the Pakistani people who continue to bear the brunt of these violent acts on every level."
Noncombatants have been the primary victims of the recent violence, which follows several months of armed conflict in Pakistan that mainly injured members of the security forces and armed militants, according to Pakistani media reports.

Blasts kill dozens in Turkish town Reyhanli on Syria border

The BBC's Naomi Grimley reports on the deadly blasts

Car bombs have killed 40 people and injured 100 in the Turkish town of Reyhanli, near the Syrian border, Turkey's interior minister says.
Muammer Guler told Turkey's NTV that two bombs had gone off in the town near the town hall and post office.
Video from the scene showed injured people being carried to safety in rubble-strewn streets, amid shattered buildings and twisted wrecks of cars.
The town is an entry-point for refugees from the war in Syria.

Local people attacked cars with Syrian number-plates and Syrian refugees after the attack, according to local media.
Emergency services looked for possible victims buried under the debris.
No group said they had carried out the attack.
'So many' It appears that the bombs went off 15 minutes apart and video posted on Turkish media shows people running to help victims of the first when there is the sound of a second explosion.
"I was sitting in my pharmacy and suddenly we heard a massive explosion," eyewitness Ismail Akin told Reuters news agency.
"When I looked from my window I saw wounded people and dead bodies."
Another witness, Hayrullah Bal, said: "We were a bit far away from the explosions, it suddenly happened and everybody started to run. It was so strong that all the windows shattered."

'All necessary measures'
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said his country would protect itself.
Mr Davutoglu, who was visiting Berlin, said: "There may be those who want to sabotage Turkey's peace, but we will not allow that.

"No-one should attempt to test Turkey's power. Our security forces will take all necessary measures."
He added that the blasts had taken place to deflect attention from efforts to solve the Syrian crisis.
UK Foreign Secretary William Hague sent a message of solidarity to the people of Turkey.
"Appalling explosions in Reyhanli, Turkey," he wrote on Twitter. "My thoughts are with family & friends of the victims. We stand with the people of Turkey."
The border area of Reyhanli has itself been attacked in recent months.
In February, an explosion near the town killed 17 people and wounded 30.
Five people were killed last October when a mortar round hit the Turkish border town of Akcakale.
The Turkish government has been a key supporter of the Syrian opposition, and has allowed rebels as well as refugees on to its territory.
But tensions in the Reyhanli area have been high for several weeks, reports say, with clashes between Turkish and Syrian youths.

Pakistan votes in landmark electionPakistan votes in landmark election

he vote marks Pakistan's first transition from one civilian government to another in its 66-year history. But sporadic violence linked to the election has claimed a number of lives. In the worst attack, 11 people were killed in a bombing on a political office in Karachi.
In the run-up to the election, more than 100 people died.
Tens of thousands of troops are deployed at polling stations after the Pakistani Taliban threatened to carry out suicide attacks.
Hours before polls opened, Pakistan sealed its borders with Iran and Afghanistan in a bid to keep foreign militants at bay.
Officials said the borders would remain closed for the next three days.
Queues started forming before polling stations opened at 08:00 (03:00 GMT) on Saturday.
Abdul Sattar, 74, said: "We want change, we are really fed up with old faces coming back to power every time and doing nothing for the nation."
By midday, 30% of registered voters had turned out, election officials estimated, describing the figure as "very encouraging". An election commission spokesman said they hoped for a figure of 60-80% by the end of the day.
The turnout in 2008 was 44%.
At a polling station on the outskirts of the capital, BBC World Affairs correspondent Mike Wooldridge said around 1,000 of the 4,000 registered voters had cast their ballots by midday, including a large proportion of women.
The BBC's Saba Eitizaz in Peshawar reported long queues of women, with many first-time voters excited about being part of the election.
EU observers in the eastern city of Lahore told the BBC that voting there was going smoothly and without any interruptions.
But voting was delayed at some polling stations in Karachi because ballot boxes and papers had not arrived.
Right-wing religious party Jamaat-e-Islami complained that some of its voters had been harassed and announced it was boycotting the vote in Karachi and areas of Hyderabad, reports said.
Voter in Karachi This man outside a polling station in Karachi said he had voted for a "better Pakistan"
Polling stations will close at 17:00.
The Taliban on Friday warned voters to boycott polling stations in order to avoid attacks on the offices of political parties.
The militants have been blamed for numerous attacks throughout the campaign on Pakistan's three most prominent liberal parties.
The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) along with the Karachi-based Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP) have been singled out for attacks by the Taliban.
As a result, the parties were forced to curtail their election campaigning.
Around two hours after polling started, a bomb attack was reported in Karachi, apparently targeting an ANP candidate outside the party's political office.

11 May elections

  • Polls opened at 08:00 local time (03:00 GMT) and close at 17:00
  • 86,189,802 registered voters
  • 5,000 are standing for 342-seat National Assembly, 272 are directly elected.
  • 11,692 Provincial Assembly candidates
  • 51 candidates are vying for the NA-48 constituency seat in Islamabad
  • More than 600,000 security and army personnel will be deployed to guard against possible attacks
  • More than 73,000 polling stations - 20,000 of which are deemed a security risk
  • Polls will mark the first time that a civilian government has completed a full five-year term and handed over to an elected successor
Eleven people were killed and more than 40 others were wounded, police told BBC News. The local ANP candidate, Amanullah Mahsud, who was in the office at the time of the attack, was wounded but not seriously.
The attack happened in the Landhi area of Karachi, an industrial district known for Taliban activity, the BBC's Shahzeb Jillani reports. Another ANP candidate and his son were shot dead close to the area last week.
Sporadic violence linked to the election was reported in several other areas of the country.
  • Seven people were hurt outside a polling station in the north-western city of Peshawar when a bomb went off attached to a motorcycle
  • A suicide bomber blew himself up after police prevented him from entering another polling station in Peshawar, police told AFP
  • A clash between two groups at a polling station in Chaman on the border with Afghanistan left least three people dead and several others hurt
  • An explosion was also reported in Quetta in the south-west
  • At least four people were hurt in a blast in Mardan in the north-west
Militants have so far avoided targeting the campaigns of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of Nawaz Sharif and the Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice) party of Imran Khan.
Mr Sharif, who was deposed as prime minister in a military coup 14 years ago, is seen as favourite to return for a third term of office.
In a bid to clamp down on corruption, election officials say electoral rolls have been refreshed and a text messaging service will provide voting information to individuals.
In previous elections there have been accusations that candidates and some state institutions rigged the vote by setting up ghost polling stations and creating millions of fake voters on the electoral rolls.
However, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on Friday expressed "acute concern" about the manner in which the violence has "impaired the fairness of the elections almost beyond repair".
It called on all institutions to "stretch themselves to their absolute limit to ensure security of voters, candidates and polling stations on Saturday so that the people can exercise their right to choose their representatives".
The Taliban threat sparked a major security operation leading up to the vote.
More than 600,000 security and army personnel have been deployed to guard against possible attacks on polling day.
On Thursday, the son of former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani was abducted during a rally.

She said that on the faithful day (April 13) on her way to work, the four accused stopped her and said Enabulele was calling her.
When she refused, they took her purse where the key to her working place was and was thus forced to follow them to see why Enabulele wanted to see her.

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's retrial starts

An image from Egyptian TV shows former President Hosni Mubarak raising his hand in courtThe retrial of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has begun at a court in Cairo.Mr Mubarak faces charges of complicity in the killings of protesters in the January 2011 uprising which overthrew him and of financial corruption.
Mr Mubarak was convicted in June 2012 but a retrial was ordered on appeal.
State TV, which is broadcasting the trial live, said he entered court sitting on a stretcher.
The retrial began amid a tense atmosphere and high emotions in court, as the judge urged lawyers to stop shouting, the BBC's Shaimaa Khalil reports.
The prosecutor then read out a list of charges against the accused.
The trial is being held at a police academy on the outskirts of the capital.
Mr Mubarak's first retrial collapsed in April amid chaotic scenes as the presiding judge referred the case to another court.
Judge Mustafa Hassan Abdullah said he was referring the trial to the Cairo appeals court as he felt "unease" in reviewing the case.
Mr Mubarak's former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six aides will also be retried on the charges relating to the killing of protesters in 2011. Mr Al-Adly will also be retried for corruption charges.
About 850 people were killed in the 2011 crackdown.
Both men successfully appealed against their convictions at Egypt's Court of Cassation, which cited procedural failings in the original trial.
Mr Mubarak's sons, Gamal and Alaa, will be retried on corruption charges for which they were acquitted in June 2012, because of the expiry of a statute of limitations.

Mubarak trial

  • Convicted in June 2012 of conspiring in the killing of protesters in 2011 and sentenced to life
  • Found not guilty in 2012 of abusing power to amass wealth
  • Appeal against his conviction upheld in January 2013
The former president was also found not guilty of corruption.
Mr Mubarak's first trial, at which he also appeared on a stretcher, lasted 10 months.
The legal proceedings have been a long and frustrating two years for the legal teams and for the families of those killed in the uprising, our correspondent reports.
One woman Umm Moaz, whose son was killed in the uprising, told the AFP agency that she had no trust in the court.
"I have no hope that they will ensure justice for my son or any martyr. My whole life has been turned upside down," she said.
There has not been as much public interest in the retrial, in contrast with the large crowds outside his court at the time of the first trial, our correspondent adds.
Last month Mr Mubarak was transferred from a military hospital to prison after Egypt's public prosecutor deemed his health was no longer in danger.
