Trans-border car snatchers return in Lagos

Trans-border car snatchers return in Lagos

Just as Lagos residents are gradually losing memory of a cross-border robbery kingpin, Hamani Tijani, who allegedly coordinated a syndicate based in Cotonou, Benin Republic, to unleash terror on motorists in the state, another set of dare-devil car snatchers from the neighbouring country have returned with fierce audacity, sending fears down the spines of posh car owners.
Investigations by Saturday Sun revealed that the trans-border robbery gang, which was smashed with the arrest, in September 2003, of Tijani, who is still being held in prison and facing trial before Justice Sybil Nwaka of a Lagos High Court on a three-count charge of “conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery and receiving stolen goods, respectively,” appears to have sneaked in again with a gradual rise in the number of vehicles snatched at gun point on Lagos roads. The snatched vehicles find their way to border towns in Ogun State preparatory to crossing to Benin Republic, where they are repackaged and sold as imported from Europe and America.
Though the Lagos State Police Command gave assurance that detectives are on the trail of members of the syndicate, one of the gang’s latest victims, Chief Akeem Adigun, who is the MD/CEO of Socopao Nig Ltd, has a bitter tale to tell of his encounter with the robbers in Fagba area of Agege, Lagos, last Tuesday. It was also gathered that the development has driven a lot of vehicle owners to install security-tracking devices in their vehicles.
Akeem, who had tracking device installed in his fleet of posh cars had a raw deal with the trans-border car snatchers when his top of the line Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle with customized number plate “Meta,” was blocked by four armed men in a Mazda 323 salon car at about 7pm along Olayiwola street in Fagba area of Agege on Tuesday.
“The Fagba road is not my usual route home but on the fateful day, I had to take that road to avoid the heavy traffic on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, so that I can come out at Abule-Egba end of the road to join my street. But somewhere along Olayiwola street in Fagba area, the four men in a car overtook my jeep with their Mazda 323 maroon colour car  and blocked me in front. I was not really sure of what they were up to because it was broad daylight until they came out with guns and ordered me out of my vehicle. I hesitated for a while before I eventually came out and the next thing I noticed was one of them raining blows on my face,” he stated. The Range Rover was a beige colour SUV at the time of the incident.
Not ready to go down without a fight, Akeem exchanged blows with one of the robbers that engaged him, while the other three stood on guard.
“In no time, I was able to overpower the one in front of me and I wrestled him to the ground. At that point, the others rained bullets on me while all passers-by and other motorists fled and abandoned their vehicles. At the end, the four of them were able to bundle me into the back of my jeep and drove off. They eventually parked somewhere in Osi quarters, located around the palace of Olota of Ota’s palace in Ota, Ogun State to drug me so that I will lose memory of my location,” he added.
Before dumping him by the road side in the middle of the night, he said they drove him round for over four hours and attempted to drug him so as to hypnotize him. According to him, “immediately they forced me to lie down on the back seat on my jeep with one sitting with me with a gun to my head and another driving my jeep while the other two drove their own maroon colour car behind us. They made a turn at the Sango toll gate, entered through Mosalasi around AIT road into Ota. At a point in Ota, they ordered me out and gave me a drug to hypnotize me, I took it but never swallowed it. From there, they put me in the booth of their own car while they went with my jeep in a direction and myself in the car booth in another.
“All through the tortuous journey, they were in touch on phone with somebody they call ‘Baba’ who I believe is their boss. The earpiece of their handset was bad, so they had to put it on speaker, so I was hearing their conversation even while I was put in the booth of their car. One thing I heard clearly was the name of one of the robbers who one of the boys with ‘Baba’ was always referring to as ‘Ade’ and at other times ‘Adex’ on the phone. After escaping with my own jeep to wherever ‘Baba’ was speaking from, the team driving me in the mazda car eventually dropped me in front of Omo filling station, behind Iganmode Grammar School in Ota at about 11.40pm after stripping me naked.”
Though Akeem, who is receiving medical attention in hospital and due to be flown abroad for further treatment, survived the hot pellets pumped into his body through some supernatural interventions, all efforts so far to recover his vehicle have proved abortive.
“Because the vehicle has a tracker installed in it, we were able to trace its last location to the border between Ogun State and Benin Republic. But since then, we have not been able to see them on the radar because they have obviously removed the battery of the car,” Akeem stated.
Hakeem Kilanko, the Chief Executive of Brashma Nig Ltd, an automobile firm told Saturday Sun that in the last four weeks, no fewer than six of his clients and relations have fallen victims to the rampaging gang. According to him, “the increase in the number of cross-border robberies has made some of our clients come requesting for installation of tracking security devices while a number of others have changed their auto orders from ordinary spec to bullet proof.”
The trend was also corroborated by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Umar Manko, who, however, declared that his officers have been doing a lot to bring the incidents under control. The state police spokesman, Ngozi Braide, added that the recent ban on motorcycles in certain parts of the state has helped to stem the trend.
According to Braide, “most of the complaints we have are those of cars removed from the park. We have continued to enlighten Nigerians on the need to install security devices in their cars. They should also bring back the era of pedal padlock, which cannot be easily removed. There is also the tracking device that can help the police to track the vehicle if stolen. Once your car is snatched, the victim should report to the nearest police station that would in turn send signal across the state.
“Our major challenge is that of the receivers who are much richer than the actual robbers. Any time they are apprehended, they would be begging you to arraign them in court. And as a bailable offence, they would have their lawyers on standby to take them on bail. If there is a stiffer punishment for such offender, I believe that such crime will be reduced.
“The fact remains that these receivers turn out to be the ones benefiting from this crime. For instance, we discovered that most of these cars are sold for as cheap as N200,000 to the receivers who will sell as high as N1.5million. They make so much gain from this illicit business and can get lawyers who would secure their release from the prison. As soon as this is done, they would return to the same crime.”
When confronted with the fact that the stolen vehicles easily find their way out of the country and return as secondhand cars, the police spokeswoman agreed, but said: “Our borders are porous and there are so many exits out of this country. Our border patrol men are working round the clock to ensure that they arrest the ones they can spot.”
She, however, warned the receivers to desist from such as the police are on their trail through informants who are willing more than ever to give information.
“It is much easier to track down stolen cars as long as the owner of the car did install tracking devices. Even if the snatchers manage to move beyond the radar of the tracking company, they can liaise with their sister company and still track the vehicle”, she added.
While giving figures about some of the recent arrests made by the police, as part of efforts to reduce the incidents to the barest minimum, she said: “Recently, we got information and arrested one in Oshodi and recovered the latest model of Toyota Corolla car that was recently stolen at Mende, Maryland, Lagos We now used him as bait to arrest the remaining three gang members at Sango, Ogun State  and recovered three more stolen cars, a Toyota Camry and Honda CRV jeep, all snatched in Lagos and hidden in their hideout in Sango area of Ogun State.  We also arrested two robbers from another group based in Sango and recovered stolen Subaru space bus from them.”
In the same vein, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the Lagos command, it was gathered, smashed another gang of robbers who specialised in snatching exotic cars at gunpoint within and around Ikorodu area. Among the suspected robbers is their leader, Saheed, who turned out to be the owner of a popular hotel in Ikorodu. Others arrested included two brothers – Taiwo Adeshina and Jelili Ojedokun. While Adeshina is based in Abuja and allegedly acts as a receiver of stolen cars, his stepbrother, Ojedokun, lives in Lagos.
Speaking on the arrest, Lagos police boss, Mr. Umar Manko, explained that Adeshina was arrested by a team of policemen attached to SARS in Abuja after he was lured out of his home by a policeman posing as a prospective buyer. His brother, Ojedokun, is also said to be in SARS custody.
According to him: “Three months ago, Saheed and his men allegedly robbed a lady of her Honda car, a BlackBerry and other items in Ikorodu. Shortly after handing over the car to Adeshina, he sold the cellphone to his friend living in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
“After the victim was robbed, she made a report at the SARS office in Ikeja. Unknown to us, the stolen vehicle was later intercepted by men of the Oyo State Police Command. However, Ojedokun disguised as the owner of the car and went to Ibadan. The vehicle was eventually released to him on compassionate grounds because he is physically challenged.
“Later, a sister to the victim was able to establish contact with Saheed’s friend, who was in possession of the smart phone via BlackBerry chat. After they had forged a friendship, the victim’s sister invited his friend to Lagos for a visit and the young man obliged. He was apprehended by the police at their rendezvous and he was the one who led the SARS team to Saheed’s home at Liadi, Ikorodu.
“Two locally made pistols were recovered from Saheed’s home at Ikorodu. His wife, who cooperated with the police, said she was unaware of his criminal activities, but had noticed that he often came home with some young men who would later retire for the night to a hotel owned by him.
“The group’s method of operation is to rob Ikorodu residents, who leave their homes early to beat the morning traffic on their way to work. They would hit their target’s car with either their motorcycle or vehicle. By the time the enraged target stops to ascertain the damage done to his vehicle, they would rob the person.
“Although Adeshina belongs to Saheed’s gang, he is also the leader of another gang based at Ijebu-Iperu, Ogun State. It was Adeshina, who would come down to Lagos and drive the stolen vehicles to Abuja, where he would find buyers for them. While in police custody, some of Adeshina’s gang members made contact with him and actually arranged a meeting. Although a SARS team went there, Adeshina’s cronies did not turn up, as planned. Investigation is on to apprehend all other gang members.”
The police are yet to confirm whether there is any link between the new cross-border robbery gang and Tijani, who has been standing trial for over nine years now.
Tijani was arrested in September 2003 in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and handed over to the Nigeria Police at Seme border for prosecution. The accused has, of late, made spirited efforts to get off the hook. His lawyer, JH Bashir, last year filed a “no case submission” and asked the court to discharge and acquit him for lack of diligent prosecution, but his request was refused by Justice Nwaka in a ruling delivered on October 23, 2012.
When the matter came up on January 14, 2013, the prosecution was not in court as a result of which it was adjourned till March 12, 2013. However, the trial was stalled again on March 12 as the court did not sit and the case was further adjourned till May 9.
Tijani was paraded with 30 other suspected cross-border robbery suspects before journalists in Abuja in 2003 by the then IGP, Tafa Balogun. In 2004, the Lagos State government charged him to court for receiving stolen property contrary to Section 427 of the Criminal Code Cap C.17 Vol.2 Laws of Lagos State 2003.
He was alleged to have, on or about August  2003 at Porto-Novo, in Benin Republic, received a Peugeot 607 salon car marked: AY 651 APP knowing same to be stolen.

Army on alert at Nigerian-Benin borders

Army on alert at Nigerian-Benin borders

General Officer Commanding, 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Ahmad Jibrin, has said that the Army is on a red alert, to ward off any possible Boko Haram infiltration through the nation’s borders with Benin Republic.
The Army boss, who spoke yesterday while receiving a 17-member team from the Indian National Defence College, at the 2 Division’s headquarters at Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan,  said his division did not maintain heavy military presence along the borders of Benin because the two countries had enjoyed a long history of cordial relationship and thus did not envisage any external aggression from its neighbours.
He, however, said that the interflow and interactions of the people of both nations has prompted the military to mount increased surveillance, in anticipation that terrorists, with foreign backing, currently locked in battle with the security forces in North eastern part of the country, might attempt to come in and open another front in the South West through the peaceful borders with Benin.
He revealed that the military maintained some forward bases along the borders, which are themselves not far from military formations with full complement of warfare facilities to respond to any eventualities.
The outposts, he said, conduct routine patrols and other military operations. The GOC pledged that the cordial relationship between Nigeria and India would continue to be deepened, describing the Asian country as the best friend of Nigeria in the area of military training, discipline and medical development. According to him, the vestiges of military discipline, which India left in Nigeria when she was invited to set up the Nigerian Defence Academy many years ago, subsisted till date.

Military planes pound Boko Haram camps

Military planes pound Boko Haram campsThe special military troops deployed to quell the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and Yobe states, yesterday intensified aerial bombardment of the sect’s camps located in the central and northern parts of the state, military source said. Among the targetted camps include Sambisa Game Reserve identified in the security circle as a major training camp for the militant group.
Other camps are said to be located around Ngala, Mafa, central Borno and Marte in the northern part of the state. Also, Gujba south of Yobe is identified as another Boko Haram hideout. Sambisa is about 50 kilometres southeast of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. Security sources disclosed that massive airstrikes were launched at the camps, leading to the death of many of the insurgents. A source claimed that at least 22 of the militants were killed.
Reports also indicated that the Boko Haram armed men made spirited efforts in bringing down a military fighter jet yesterday with their anti-aircraft guns but were suppressed by the military offensive. A top intelligence source also revealed that some of the insurgents appear to have been abandoning their camps under aerial attacks and retreating into the deserts of Chad and Niger republic.
Spokesman of the Nigeria Defence Headquarters, Brig Gen Chris Olukolade said in Abuja that the military troops used jets and helicopters to bombard Boko Haram camps and hideouts both at Sambisa Game Reserve and other areas identified as Boko Haram camps by the Nigerian security agencies. According to him, “a number of insurgents have been killed. It is not just at Sambisa, every camp is under attack,” Brig Gen Olukolade said yesterday in Abuja.
He also disclosed that the military was yet to do mopping up operations on the ground at the sect camps to ascertain the number of militants killed in the attack. Apart from closing of the borders, most of the major roads linking Borno with neighbouring Adamawa and Yobe states, the two other states under state of emergency, have been cordoned off by security forces. “We were not allowed to pass to Biu road today (Friday) on our way to Yola. We were turned back and we have to obey,” a commercial driver claimed. An army personnel told Saturday Sun the measure was to checkmate the militants from fleeing into other states.
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe share borders locally and internationally with Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Meanwhile, the total shutdown of telecommunications network of the major Global Mobile Services (GSM) in Borno and Yobe continued yesterday. Though, residents witnessed an improvement in the early hours of Friday but at about 11am, the network was completely cut off. Saturday Sun gathered reliably that the GSM network shutdown was part of the security measures in the ongoing offensive against the Boko Haram militants. “It is to ensure that the terrorists are disconnected completely and the measure is working,” the source said. Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), yesterday, said that advancing troops of Special Task Force (STF), have destroyed some terrorists’ camps sited in the forests of Northern and central Borno.
A statement from the DHQ signed by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brigadier General Chris Olukolade, and made available to the media in Abuja, said that heavy weapons including anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns were also destroyed in the process. “The special operations, which preceded troops movement, have resulted in the destruction of much of the insurgents’ weapons and logistics such as vehicles, containers, fuel dumps and power generators. The casualties inflicted on the insurgents in the cause of the assault will be verified during mop-up.
“The Defence Headquarters is quite satisfied with the progress of the operation and the fighting spirit of participating troops. The Special Task Force has been enjoined to sustain the tempo”, the statement disclosed. It further stated that border posts have all been manned by security agents to prevent escape or infiltrations by insurgents.

Lagos loses N40b property to fire

Lagos loses N40b property to fire

The Lagos State Government at the weekend said it has lost property worth N39.6 billion to fire in the state in the last one year. The Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Oyinlomo Danmole, who disclosed this to journalists at a news conference held in Alausa, said the state government also saved properties worth N390 billion.
According to Danmole, the Lagos State Fire Services received a total of 2,342 calls, out of which 1,731 were fire calls and were promptly responded to.  The commissioner added that the fire service received 103 rescue calls, seven collapsed building calls, 458 false calls while 41 victims were rescued, adding that 10 collapsed building were recorded in the last one year. “The fire service has undergone various transformations, which have enhanced its operational capabilities and capacity to effectively curtail incidents of fire outbreaks and related emergencies in the state.
A total of 2, 342 calls were received and promptly responded to in the last one year,” he said.  Speaking on naturalisation of aliens/special immigrant status, the commissioner said 29 applications were received for both naturalisation and special immigrant status in the last one year.  Danmole said that 23 applicants of the lots appeared for interview all of which were eventually recommended to the Ministry of Interior for ratification.
“The state government has given its support to the new passport office recently commissioned at Ikeja Central Business District. The office was provided with furniture, air conditioners, a generating set and a utility van. This gesture was done to quicken the commencement of operation in the new passport office and reduce the inconvenience of Lagosians travelling to Ikoyi or Festac to obtain travelling passport.  “A purchase order for firemen protective apparels such as cork helmet, safety boots, and fire protective suits, among others, to ensure maximum protection for the firemen while performing their duties were ordered.
“Acquisition of 118 complete set of breathing apparatus and 11 compressor machines to enable firemen to work in a smoke-laden environment where the available air does not support life were acquired. The compressor machines are for the refilling of the used breathing apparatus cylinders,” he explained.  The commissioner said that the government also procured thermal image camera to help locate trap victims and detect the primary source of fire during fire fighting operation as well as the provision of new operational and ceremonial uniforms to all officers of the fire service to enhance the image of the staff and boost their self-esteem.
He lamented that indiscriminate on-road parking in residential areas often impede the operation of fire services and called for the removal of street gates which prevents quick access to disaster areas as well as yielding of right of way to fire vehicles by motorists, especially during peak hours.  Danmole said the fire service officers were often faced with unsolicited and violent interference by hoodlums during fire fighting operations, saying the trend resulted in damages to equipment at various times.
“The overwhelming interference sometimes resulted into escalation of fire disaster as the trained officers will not be able to attack the fire from the source while the hose is being dragged from the officers. “There should be the provision of clear and vivid description of fire disaster location by callers. There is need to eradicate false fire calls to stem the trend of wasting human and material resources that would have been reserved for use in fighting real fire disaster. Attack on fire officers and willful damage to fire -fighting equipment should stop.”

Boko Haram shifts attack to Katsina

From ANDY ASEMOTA, Katsina, UBONG UKPONG, Abuja, ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE, Kaduna and DESMOND MGBOH, Kano
Boko Haram shifts attack to KatsinaBlood flowed in Daura, Katsina State, hometown of former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari Thursday night, when about 11 persons, including soldiers and policemen, were killed, in an exchange of gunfire among gunmen, suspected to be members of Boko Haram, police and soldiers.
Saturday Sun gathered that the gunmen had attacked four commercial banks and two police stations in the operations that started around 9p.m. before security operatives engaged them in firefight.
An eyewitness revealed that the gunmen, who stormed Daura in six vehicles, including three Toyota Hellux vans, also attacked the base of the soldiers stationed in Daura Local Government Secretariat, where they reportedly killed three of the soldiers on duty.
From there, the gunmen stormed the nearby Daura Central Police Station, which was bombed, before attacking the four commercial banks in the town.
Investigations revealed that the banks’ doors and vaults were forced open with bombs and a yet-to-be estimated amount of money was looted.
Sources further revealed that two policemen were killed by the bandits at Sabon Gari Police Station in Daura during the attack.
The state Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Magaji, who confirmed in Daura that the police also killed four of the bandits, in another exchange of fire outside Daura, however, said he was yet to be briefed on the soldiers and police casualties.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army headquarters yesterday, confirmed that seven people were killed in the shootout between Boko Haram insurgents and security operatives.
Chief of Civil Military Relations, Major General Mobolaji Koleoso, while briefing the press in Abuja, said that the Army was worried that the insurgents had resorted to wearing camouflages that resembled those of the Army, to deceive the public and carryout their attacks with ease.
Koleoso told journalists that at about 10 pm on Thursday, a distressed calls were put up to the 35 Battalion, Katsina State, by people at Daura. He said that the battalion mobilised troops on offensive against the insurgents, revealing that during the shootout two soldiers and two Boko Haram insurgents were killed on the spot. E also said that three Boko Haram members, who fled with gunshot injuries, died in an auto crash on the road.
General Koleoso disclosed that two rifles with large quantity of ammunition were among items recovered from the insurgents. He pointed out that the Boko Haram insurgents were dressed in fake camouflage that resembled those used by the military.
The General noted that this was the case in Bama attack, as he displayed photographs of insurgents killed in fake camouflage. He said that both normal Army camouflage, which was super-imposed with dark green and the desert camouflage that had much of lemon green colour, was distinct from the two fake camouflage used by the Boko Haram, which had much of brown super-imposed in them.
Koleoso warned the public not to trust anybody in camouflage, but to look again, as all those in camouflage did not belong to the Army.
In a related development, the army authority has called on people of Daura community to push out or report people with gun injuries.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Garba A. Wahab, made the appeal in Kaduna yesterday, saying that if the people of Daura refused to report anybody with gun injuries to the Army, such insurgents will come back to attack them in the future.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, Wahab disclosed that the criminals, during the attack, bombed three police stations and robbed four banks in Daura town, adding that some of them were killed in the gun with men under his division.
According to the GOC, “I called this press conference to fill the gap on the attack that occurred and is still taking place in Daura, Katsina State. We had an incident from 10pm on Thursday evening when criminals attacked three police stations and four banks in Daura town. At the end of the operation, even though it is still on, I have lost three of my men, two, including an officer, are wounded. I am not bothered about the casualties of the criminals, but we have been able to recover four AK47 rifles from them.
“Another group of the criminals had a road traffic accident, which three of them died; they engaged the police and the civil defence in that town and one of the vehicles they were travelling with was seen with a huge amount of money, which I have instructed my boys to give to the police to count and safe-keep, to be given back to the bank because that’s not my job, but the guns recovered in that vehicle by troops are in the custody of the division.
“We cannot fold our arms and watch criminals bomb and burn police stations, rob banks with impunity, irrespective of the disguise within which these people are operating in Nigeria and the president has given us the directive to be deployed; we are duty-bound and we will ensure that there is peace and security in the country.”
He emphasised that the army tries as much as possible to reduce collateral damage, saying: “Nobody will give an instruction for an innocent life to be lost; so in whatever we do, we keep to the rules of engagement given to us and that is why I have called the media to lend us their support because when a few reports go out, it’s like it is encouraging the criminals and they start to think they have the upper hand.”
Meanwhile, the Brigade Commander, 3rd Brigade of the Nigeria Army, Bukavu, Brigadier Illysu Abbah, who briefed the media on the incident in Kano, confirmed that three of his  soldiers lost their lives in the attack.
According to the Brigade Commander, items recovered from the insurgents included 11 AK47  rifles, 73 magazines, 275 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 118 rounds of FNW ammunition, 141 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, one smoke gun, two vehicles  and various improvised  devices.
“The Brigade would like to  also advise  financial institutions  with outstations outside of the state capitals to always leave minimal unattractive cash  in their vaults at the end of a business day as terrorists are in need of cash,” he stressed.
“The Brigade would like to reassure the general public  of the determination of the unit and other security agencies to protect the lives and property of the law abiding citizens,” he added.

What Happened Between Me and Uche Ogbodo – Harrysong Issues Statement

harrysong and uche obodo lindaikejiblogI am forced to speak on the picture of myself and actress Uche Ogbodo being circulated around the web following queries from fans and well wishers. I was going to let it play like any other joke but I was stunned when a fan recently – should I say excited fan – attacked me verbally on a radio station where I dropped by to talk about being a part of 2face’s Campus connect tour.
harrysong and uche obodo lindaikejiblog.jpg3First, Uche Ogbodo is a very dear friend but we are not dating. She’s more of a sister to me and not a lover. I believe a peck doesn’t necessarily translate to an affair but I could be wrong. Maybe it is not common amongst my colleagues to own up during an affair but I can assure you that we are not an item. In all modesty, Writing hit songs for my colleagues like ‘Limpopo’ by KCee and Omotola Ekeinde, recording my own songs (working on a new single), still promoting my new video for ‘I’m in love’ remix with Olamide as well readying another video possibly for my track with Timaya would be a lot to combine with a relationship, at this point.
So what happened? The picture was taken on my which took place at Elegushi beach late at night hence it was not complimentary (on a lighter note, I am quite a good looking so is Uche, very good looking lady! that picture didn’t do us justice) We were partying which should explain the circumstance the picture was taken.
Threesomes also don’t happen at parties, a mutual friend watched on as She planted a ‘peck’ (quick kiss) on my lips and we giggled afterwards.
Please see it as the lighthearted activity that it was and nothing more.
My apologies to only fans who found it less pleasing and thank you for all the support.
Unto matta,

Italy coalition: Thousands rally in Rome against cuts

Protesters against austerity in Rome, 18 May The rally was led by the metalworkers' union FIOM
Thousands of protesters, led by trade unionists, have rallied in the Italian capital Rome against the policies of the new coalition government.
Wielding red flags and placards, they urged the centre-left Prime Minister, Enrico Letta, to scrap austerity measures and focus on job creation.
Public trust in his fragile coalition with the centre-right is dropping, opinion polls suggest.
The country is experiencing its longest recession in more than 40 years.
National debt is now about 127% of annual economic output, second only to Greece in the eurozone.

Unemployment is at a record high of 11.5% - 38% for the under-25s.
Before taking office, Mr Letta vowed to make job creation his priority, but critics are unhappy that he has focused on property tax reform.
The issues of social justice and poverty came up when German Chancellor Angela Merkel had talks with the new Pope, Francis, at the Vatican on Saturday.
'Losing patience' Organised by the metalworkers' union FIOM and the CGIL union, Saturday's peaceful march and rally drew supporters form across the country. The turnout was unclear but 50,000 people had been expected to attend.
"We ask the government to change [former Prime Minister Mario] Monti's and [former Prime Minister Mario Silvio] Berlusconi's politics," said Maurizio Landini, leader of the FIOM.
"If they don't change, as the country asked for with its vote, we are going nowhere."
One of the protesters, Enzo Bernardis, told Reuters news agency: "We hope that this government will finally start listening to us because we are losing our patience."
Soon after being appointed, Mr Letta met other eurozone leaders to convey growing public unrest over austerity measures in Italy.
But the new prime minister has to maintain a delicate balance between the policies of his own supporters and those of the centre-right, led by Mr Berlusconi.
Italy's coalition was only formed after two months of post-election deadlock.

On Thursday, the Pope said in a speech that the global economic crisis had made life worse for millions in rich and poor countries.
Speaking after her private meeting with the pontiff, Mrs Merkel told reporters: "Crises have blown up because the rules of the social market have not been observed...
"It is true that economies are there to serve people and that has by no means always been the case in recent years."
Mrs Merkel said she and Pope Francis had spoken mainly about globalisation, the European Union and the role of Europe in the world.
"Pope Francis made it clear that we need a strong, fair Europe and I found the message very encouraging," she added.
While she is not a Catholic herself, Mrs Merkel, the daughter of a Lutheran minister, leads a party with a strong Catholic component.

But we are not taking any chances. We are in touch with the Nigerian High Commissioner and we can handle any kind of eventuality,” said Emmanuel Ikpeme, NFF assistant secretary general (technical).
He said that the NFF and the entire team are fully aware of the importance of the the game and as such the coaches are psyching up their players.
“Our players are professionals and they will be able to keep their cool no matter the psychological warfare.
“If Kenya can come here and score we will also do the same in Nairobi. This is football and anything can happen.
“As a federation, we are doing everything we need to do. And this goes for the coaches and players too. We expect nothing short of a win,” he said.
The Eagles suffering from Nations Cup hangover rallied to rescue a point in Calabar after the Harambee Stars went ahead. Nigeria, tied on points with Malawi, must win to have a realistic chance of reaching the 2014 World Cup. Kenya are bottom placed, a win will give them a mathematical chance of advancing depending on the other game between third placed Namibia and Malawi on June 6.
